The Valiant Soldier Square - a central square with special status

The Valiant Soldier Square is Fredericia’s most significant square. It is located in the heart of the city, right by Fredericia Ramparts, The White Water Tower, and Prince’s Gate, and is named after a very special figure.

Named after Fredericia’s iconic Valiant Soldier

The square’s centerpiece is the statue The Valiant Soldier, world-famous for being the first monument to the ordinary soldier, erected after the Battle of Fredericia in 1849. The Valiant Soldier is Fredericia’s most important landmark, giving the square a very special significance in the city.

At the Valiant Soldier Square, you’ll also find The Old Main Guardhouse, where a military guard was stationed until 1934, and the beautiful Prince’s Gate, which was originally the only entrance and exit to the fortress town.

Renovation in 2023: A fresh look for the square

In 2023, the Valiant Soldier Square was renovated and expanded, funded by the A.P. Møller Foundation. Today, the square is more beautiful than ever, with a wide promenade and excellent accessibility for everyone.

The Fortress Days in Fredericia: When history comes alive

Every year during the Fortress Days in Fredericia, the Valiant Soldier Square plays a central role. The changing of the guard is recreated at The Old Main Guardhouse, the square is decorated with red and white flowers, and the July 5th torchlight procession begins here.
